Trade mark statistics

If you want to protect a national trade mark in Switzerland, you can do so by filing an application with the IPI. Most applicants use e-trademark – almost 98% of applications were submitted via this online service in 2023. Once a trade mark is successfully examined, it is entered as a national trade mark in the Swiss trade mark register and published at www.swissreg.ch.

As well as national trade marks, trade marks that are already protected abroad can be registered for protection in Switzerland via the Madrid System. There are slightly more international trade marks in the trade mark register than national trade marks – around 52% of trade marks active in Switzerland in 2023 were international trade marks.

Applications by canton 2023

Last year, most trade mark applications originated once again from the Canton of Zurich (17.1% of all applications). This was followed by Zug (7%), Vaud (6.4%), Geneva (6.4%) and Bern (6.2%).

Note: If a trade mark is filed jointly by several applicants, it is counted several times.

Most popular goods and services classes in 2023

Trade marks are only protected for certain classes of goods and services. In 2023, most applications were filed for class 35 (advertising; business management; business administration; office functions). You can find more information about the classes of goods and services in our classification tool.

Most popular trade mark types

The word mark came in first place once again – more than 56% of all trade marks filed in 2023 consisted exclusively of printable characters, such as letters and numbers. Combined trade marks, consisting of words and images, are also popular (38.3%). Filings of purely figurative marks (4.7%) and other types, such as acoustic marks (0.6%), are more rare.
