Apple Macintosh: when the computer became cute

The Apple Macintosh entered the computer scene 40 years ago. With its rather cute design and mouse, it broke the mould optically and attracted attention.

Apple Macintosh
You almost want to hug it. The 1984 Macintosh (USD285687).

The computer is a good example of the influence that design can have on consumers. Apple’s Macintosh stood out from other computers, and the company also did its IP rights homework. A few months before it was officially launched (on 25 January 1984), the housing design was filed with the US patent office under the name ‘computer housing’. An application with multiple drawings was also filed for the mouse to protect its design from free riders.

A patent? Design protection is known differently in the US

Good to know: in the United States, the term ‘design patent’ is used for design protection. The shapes protected by this right have nothing to do with standard patents, however. Standard patents protect inventions that solve a technical problem (e.g. a circuit in a computer).
